There's something about alpacas that just makes people relax. Maybe it's the big eyes. Maybe it's the fluff. Maybe it's the way they look at you like they're trying to decide if you're interesting enough to sniff. (Spoiler: you usually are.) That's exactly why Walking with the Alpacas is one of my favorite experiences we offer.

Why alpacas make great walking buddies

Alpacas are herd animals with calm, gentle personalities. They're curious about people but not pushy, and they move at a nice easy pace. They don't have hooves, either. They have soft, padded feet with two toes, which is part of why they're so easy on our pastures and so pleasant to be around.

Every alpaca also has their own personality. Some are confident and want to lead the way. Some are a little shy and like to stick close to their buddies. Some are total divas who will stop to pose for photos. Getting to know them is half the fun.

What you can expect

Walking with the Alpacas is a slower, more personal way to spend time with our herd. Our staff will be with you the whole time, so you'll learn how we care for the alpacas, what makes each one unique, and how to read their body language. (Ears back? Give them some space. Ears up and forward? They're interested in you.)

This experience needs a reservation, and it goes along with a self-guided or guided tour ticket, so you can explore the rest of the farm before or after your walk.

A few tips

  • Move slowly and speak softly. Alpacas are prey animals, so calm energy helps them feel safe.
  • Let them come to you. Most alpacas aren't big fans of being patted on the head. Their necks and backs are usually a better bet, but follow our staff's lead.
  • Wear comfy shoes. You'll be on your feet, and the farm has some uneven ground.
  • Bring a camera. Alpacas are extremely photogenic and they know it.

About the spitting thing

Everyone asks! Alpacas mostly spit at each other, usually over food or personal space. People are rarely the target. Our alpacas are used to visitors and our staff know them well, so you're in good hands.

Award-winning company

We're proud of our herd. Eagle Eye Farm was named the #1 small alpaca farm in the country in 2022 and the #1 medium alpaca farm in 2023 by the Alpaca Owners Association. All of our alpacas are Huacaya, the fluffy, teddy-bear-looking type, except Viper, our one Suri. When you walk with them, you're spending time with some pretty special animals.

Head over to our Walking with the Alpacas page to learn more and book your spot. The alpacas are waiting (and probably already judging your outfit, in the nicest way).
