One of the questions we get most often is, "Which tour should I do?" Great question. Both are fun, both get you up close with our animals, and both give you that "wait, there are kangaroos in Wisconsin?" moment. The difference is really about how you like to explore.

The self-guided tour: explore on your schedule

If you like to wander, linger and go at your own pace, the self-guided tour is your jam. No reservation needed. Just show up any time between 10am and 4pm and start exploring. Spend twenty minutes watching the goats climb things they definitely shouldn't, or camp out by the alpacas until somebody comes over to sniff your hair. Nobody's rushing you.

Self-guided is great for:

  • Families with little ones who need flexibility (and snack breaks)
  • Last-minute "what should we do today?" plans
  • Repeat visitors who already know their way around
  • Photographers who want time to get the perfect shot

The guided tour: get the inside scoop

If you're the type who wants to know everything, the guided tour is for you. One of our staff members walks you around the farm and shares stories, fun facts and personality quirks you'd never pick up on your own. Who's the troublemaker? Who's the drama queen? Why do the alpacas all use the same bathroom spot? You'll find out. Guided tours need a reservation, so book ahead.

Guided is great for:

  • First-time visitors who want the full story
  • Curious kids (and adults) with a million questions
  • Anyone who wants to learn how a farm with more than 130 animals actually runs

Either way, add an experience

Want to take it up a notch? Our animal experiences, like Walking with the Alpacas, the porcupine experience and our kangaroo experiences, go along with either type of tour ticket. They're a fantastic way to make a visit extra memorable.

Good to know for both

  • We're open 10am to 4pm, every single day of the year.
  • Tours run rain, shine or snow, so dress for the weather.
  • Most visits last one to two hours.
  • Kids 2 and under are free.

Still can't decide?

Honestly? You can't go wrong. Lots of families start with a guided tour on their first visit and come back for self-guided visits after that. Take a look at our farm tour options, pick what feels right, and come see us in River Falls. The animals are ready when you are.
