When people hear "porcupine," they usually picture something prickly and grumpy. Then they meet Meredith and George, and everything changes. Our porcupines are some of the most surprising, charming animals on the farm, and the porcupine experience is one of my favorite things we offer.
Who are Meredith and George?
Meredith and George are prehensile-tailed porcupines. These aren't the porcupines you might see waddling through the Wisconsin woods. Prehensile-tailed porcupines come from Central and South America, and they live in trees. Their long tails can actually grip branches, a bit like an extra hand, which helps them climb and balance.
They also have big, expressive faces, round noses and a whole lot of personality. People are always shocked by how cute they are, and by how gentle and curious they can be.
What about the quills?
Everyone asks! Yes, they have quills, and those quills are a defense system. But porcupines can't shoot their quills. That's a myth. The quills come loose when something makes contact with them. Our staff know exactly how to handle Meredith and George safely, and they'll guide you every step of the way so the experience is safe and comfortable for both you and the porcupines.
Why the experience is so special
Most people will never get this close to a porcupine in their whole lives. During the porcupine experience, you'll spend time with Meredith and George with one of our staff members, learn about how they live, what they eat and what makes them unique, and get the kind of up-close moment that makes for amazing photos and even better stories.
Fun fact: prehensile-tailed porcupines can be pretty chatty. They make all kinds of little squeaks, grunts and whines. Listen closely and you might hear them "talk."

- Reservations are required. Book your spot ahead of time.
- Add it to a tour. The porcupine experience goes along with a self-guided or guided tour ticket, so you can explore the rest of the farm, too.
- Follow staff instructions. Calm, gentle guests make for happy porcupines.
- Bring your camera. Trust me on this one.
