I'll say it: fall might be the best season on the farm. The bugs calm down, the air gets crisp, and the animals seem to get a second wind. If you've been looking for a cozy weekend outing (or a weekday escape), here's why autumn at Eagle Eye Farm is worth the drive.

The animals love cooler weather

A lot of our animals are built for chilly temps, so when the heat of summer breaks, they perk right up. You'll notice more playing, more wandering and more curious faces at the fence. Morning or afternoon, fall is a great time to catch everyone active.

Fluff is making a comeback

Our alpacas get sheared in the spring, so by fall their fleece has had months to grow back. They're well on their way to full teddy-bear status again, and they look extra snuggly. Our mini Highland cattle start growing in their shaggy winter coats too. Basically, everyone is getting fluffier by the week, and it's adorable.

Watch for wardrobe changes

Fall is when a lot of animals change things up. Peacocks shed their long, showy tail feathers after the summer breeding season and grow them back over the following months, so don't be surprised if the boys look a little less fancy for a while. Chickens often molt in the fall too, losing and regrowing feathers. It's a good time to talk with kids about how animals get ready for winter.

Tips for a fall visit

  • Layer up. Fall mornings can be chilly and afternoons can warm up fast.
  • Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty. Leaves, rain and uneven ground are all part of the experience.
  • Bring your camera. Fall colors plus fluffy animals equals your next holiday card photo.
  • Remember our hours. We're open 10am to 4pm daily, and guests should plan to be off the farm by about 4pm. Days get shorter in fall, so don't wait too late.
  • Rain? Come anyway. Tours run rain, shine or snow.

Make it a day

River Falls is about 35 to 40 minutes from Minneapolis-St. Paul, which makes it an easy day trip. Spend an hour or two with the animals, then stop by our farm store, All Things Sheared, for cozy alpaca socks before winter hits. (Your toes will thank you in January.)

Join us for Pasture Palooza

Fall is a fun season for special events on the farm, and the big one is Pasture Palooza on Saturday, October 17. Get tickets and all the details on our Pasture Palooza page.
